Netball trialsSeparated by distance yet connected by a sense of La Trobe patriotism and love of sport, students from various campuses gathered at La Trobe University, Bendigo Sunday 6 April to tryout for this years’ Southern University Games (SUGs).

With help from the Bendigo Student Association who facilitated all the facility bookings, approximately 90 students from Albury-Wodonga, Mildura and Bendigo took part in the Uni Games sports carnival that offered tryouts in 11 different sports.

Students had the opportunity to tryout for multiple sports that day. Sports on offer included Aussie Rules football, basketball, futsal, hockey, lawn bowls, netball, soccer, touch, tennis, ultimate frisbee and volleyball.

Whilst attending the tryouts meant a nine-hour return trip to Bendigo, Dylan Darby, Bachelor of Education student from Mildura enjoyed the day and hopes to be selected to represent La Trobe at SUGS in either the Australian Rules football or mixed netball team this year.

Darby currently plays for local Mildura football club The Imperials and has done for as long as he can remember but wants to get involved in UniSport.

“It was a really good day, good to meet students from other campuses, good to get to know people. The day was both competitive and social at the same time,” said Darby.

It was the first year Uni Games sports carnival tryouts were held in Bendigo in an effort to improve accessibility for students from regional campuses. Louise Becker believes its important students from various campuses connect and hopes interest from students at Mildura will only continue to grow.

“For any student, being a part of La Trobe is getting involved with the wider community,” said Becker, La Trobe Education Administrator from Mildura.

For regional students in particular she said it’s important they feel a sense of belonging to the greater La Trobe community.

Jack Spark, first year Bachelor of Paramedics student from La Trobe Albury-Wodonga said his friends had raved about SUGs and Australian University Games, hence he was keen to give it a go.

Jack who tried out for both Australian Rules football and Touch said the day was good fun and that the main issue in regards to attendance by students from his campus was travel.

La Trobe University was overall champion at the regional Southern University Games in 2010, 2011 and 2013. Almost 300 La Trobe students competed in Ballarat last year, securing six gold medals and the winner’s trophy. The goal will be to retain the title of Champions in 2014.

SUGs will be held in Wodonga this year from 6-10 July. Appreciation extended to the Sports Managers, BSA, WSA and Louise Becker.
